Have you been reading Margot's Room all month by Emily Carroll? If not you should have. In fact it's never to late, go now. I can wait. Wasn;t that fantastically good? You're welcome!

Here's the whole reason for this post - I love Ms. Carroll's comics. Love them. Love her style, love her sense of pacing but most of all I love what she does with comics online. Sure I love her book formats but her stuff really sings online. The ability to not have a page format to adhere to. To link section to section to ensure the pace of the comic (at least a little) No looking ahead! It's fantastic!

If she is ever going to have a pay service (you know to make money doing this!). I think I'd have to find a way to pay to get to see these comics. And it'll be worth every cent! (Or dollar... Whichever. It'll be worth it!)

I'm 100% serious.

Thoughts on the Real Zombie Holocaust

I know, if the title of this lured you on thinking I was going to wax emotional on all the tech zombies and drug zombies currently wandering the earth, I'm sorry, this isn't about them at all. Instead I'm going to post my thoughts on a few disturbing articles I have read about the state of the world's oceans. It's pretty bleak.

June 19, 2011; the Tampa Tribune printed an article titled "Underwater Noise Effects Examined." In it, they described the findings of research done about how all that extra noise we put in the oceans is affecting the life there. It's not just the sonar either. Loud engines, underwater industrial tools, etc. Remember how bad it is to tap on the glass of an aquarium? Imagine playing drums on one then adding a blender and some deathmetal. Welcome to the tranquil undersea world? Hardly.
The article states: "In the past decade, beaked whales washed ashore with bleeding around the brain shortly after exposure to midfrequency sonar. Researchers figured out that stranded bottlenose dolphins often were nearly deaf."
Horrifying, isn't it? It's as I'd someone has cone into your home and is randomly using an airhorn against your head - over and over and you can't make them stop. You just have to take it and do your best. Since we're just now starting to think it should be researched no one takes it seriously - and no one does until the situation is so bad they don't need all the proof anymore.

Today, June 21, 2011; there was an article titled "Health of oceans 'bleak,' scientists say." This article discussed that the current die off of oceanic species would rival past mass extinctions. I don't know about the rest of you out there but extinction is a terrifying word to me. In a report being presented to the United Nations, scientists have pooled together all their small tragedies they have been watching all over the globe separately and in doing so they've found out we're all pretty screwed. "The report says the troubles from global warming and other factors are worse in combination. Factors include dead zones from farm run-off, an increase in acidity from too much carbon dioxide and melting sea ice, along with overfishing." The report goes on to state that we are facing losing entire ocean ecosystems, like a coral reef, within a generation.

Imagine a dead ocean. Devoid of life it would be empty and barren and with the current direction of things - rising. That is where the zombie comes in. It's a dead entity rising and laying waste to the still living. Like all horrors we are making it and unlike the shambling reanimated corpses the dead ocean is unstoppable.

I don't know, I just thought it was something to think about.

Sorry this is crapilly done - It was done while working on the probably destined to be late page 9 of DokiDoki. I love sharks and whales. What do people kill? Sharks and Whales! Knock it off! Finning is way worse than... Well anything plus THE FINS HAVE NO TASTE! WTF. Put tofu in! Same thing but less crazy craziness and ocean destruction.

Killing whales - also a tragically bad idea. But we all know that.

Speaking of - it really says something of us as a species when we look for the loopholes to be crazy/creepy/violent to ourselves and others. I mean heck - people whose religion forbade the spilling of blood came up with more horrible crazy ways to torture people - just no mess of blood. What the heck? Nutty.

What does this post have to say about anything? NOTHING. It has NOTHING coherent because the whole time I am typing it my brain is running in tight circles going OMG THE COMIC OMG THE COMIC. So...

This was the parchment piece I did for my grandma's birthday. Lots of embossing hole punchign and tiny scissor cutting. And man does the cutting leave my fingers a mess!!!

New Project!

So I have been putzing about with some ideas for a webcomic sort of thing for a while. Now - there are some warnings:

It's a fairy tale setting. Princes, Knights, magical hoodoo, talking horses, fairies, etc.
It's cute boys in love. You're not going to see any hot guy on guy action - sorry! I would not be able to pull that off at all. But I wanted to tell you if you are bothered by boys kissing, hugging, loving other boys this is not for you. Sorry! My other stories may eventually interest you. (Well maybe not Midnight... But Abracadabra for sure has no romance at all!!)
It will update when I can... Meaning... When I can get a page done and uploaded. Seriously it takes me some time and the idea of making a set schedule so I can fail at it does not appeal to me at all. So the schedule is: When there's a new page it's there! Sorry... :( Maybe if this makes me a better artist then I can set a schedule.
There is no number 4. If I had thought this through in an awesome way there would be no number 1 and I would go to six and say WHO IS NUMBER ONE!!!???
Kudos to anyone who understands the meaning of #4.

When Kristen visited we sat down and she did a watercolor demo with me. I'm glad. I am a control freak!! So bing able to watch someone have horrible things happen with paint and just shrug it off and make it work really helps.

I still am a control freak....

The weird black on the blue of her fur coat is because I added flocking to it. And have totally pet it off her....

Hence the blue patches!!!

orry to say that I've slacked off a bit what with wisdom teeth, a near miss job, and of course the resume of teaching and helping mom paint the house. The good news is next year I get to go to ComicCon and HHN is so gonna rock this year!! THE YEAR OF FEAR BABY! XX! The night me and Kristen are going even SciFi's Ghost Hunters will be there. Also, viva the Florida Resident Discount!!! <3

Other news.... Working on an art project with Kristen and also on Midnight, trying to get some of it scripted/plotted.... Also trying to finish pencilling out Abracadabra Book 1. Well the first story to go in the book anyway.

Anyway some silence while I work on things for classes. I swear I'll at least get the daily drawings up.... Once I catch up. :(

Hi, my name is Trish and at age 35 my wisdomteeth that came in perfectly and were my pride and joy since age 17 TURNED ON ME and despite flossing and brushing and mouthwash got a case of the rot so yesterday morning I had them removed from my being and placed myself in a land of Jesus my face hurts and what do you mean I can't enjoy pizza for dinner but you can goddamnit!

Life is tough all over. In z case of serendipity, my friend Cheryl all the way in Texas went in on the same day for the same thing. Nutty! Then I had to call my cc company cuz they were afraid the charge for my teeth was fraudulent and the kind American lady told me she was going in tomorrow fir hers! What is this an outbreak???

Mind your teeth y'all, and remember to floss properly or the next cleaning you get will leave you looking like you lost a fight!

So... Apologies are in order. The only stamp designed by me is of course the constable. Totoros all come from some Totoro stamp set I can't afford so I pirated it. The bug, flower and button come from various stamp selling sites who never mention who made them anyway but I can't afford a $10 stamp man. I can't. The shark is courtesy of Lexuswolf. Now... Courtesy of don't mean I asked... I just took. I stole. I pirated. But these aren't for sale, I just liked the shark man! Shark Week!!! :( Ditto for Workparty's Toothless. But... What can I say? I wasn't at AX, if I had been I would have straight up bought it. I'm not though so I just pirated my own.

As an aside, the Japanese stamp carving material is so much better than my Speedball SpeedyCarve. I can't even tell you! Also, The more I carved Totoro the more creepy he started becoming to me. His smile started becoming more and more psycho as I went.... It's because he's all 8D !! D:

Fonts Matter to Me

I finally finished my epic Wonderland Project for Kristen. I'm never giving a monthly present thing again. Never! It sort of just... Anyway. This is the very first tiny crown I have ever made. I know the tiny tophats are all in fashion but.... Crowns are cool. Next I will try and make a tiny head-present like in Tinier Me and a tiny birdcage if... I can get over my fear of my sodering iron. IT BURNS!!!!

So... This crown is not made of metal (terror) but paper. I have secret ways of shaping cardboard and next time I will use those skills on the bent arms BEFORE I spraypaint it.... Isn't the silver nice? It's not that glaring I'M EFFING SILVER silver but brushed nickel... I dunno I like it. I was also really attracted to the graphite metallic and some really bizarre color that.... wouldn't've worked at all but I still wanted it!!! I was lucky that Kristen likes color ranges like I do - blues and dark colors. Lucky! typing decorative boys is bs hard. I feel horrible for florists who have to do it all the time. The gems are those handy swavorski crystals. Thank god for coupons but even then this was a costly enterprise!! :T Not to mention how many times I burnt the living shit out of myself on the hot glue.

My fingers still hurt. :(

I also sent her a nice stamp carved on some of the precious precious Hankeshikun which is indeed as marvelous as everyone says. Sure held up to the tiny kanji unlike the blasted SpeedyCarve!

Blah blah blah. I am so lazy in summer I am lucky to breathe with any regularity. Here's the tiny bit I've done. Mostly I have been reading the Mistborn Trilogy. It's really good and in 30 pages I'll be done.

I don't understand her pose. It just happened that way. I think she might be about to hit something.

Trent bits... I have two guys named Trent... Well.... It's the same guy but in two different storylines... If that makes sense? He's a chef in both but in one he has a more mystical important role. A rework of Agatha I hated, and some Algernons.

Rough thumbnails for Midnight. I had a short burst of inspiration but... Yeah he's so puking a lot.

Artie from Warehouse 13. I LOVE that show. It's hard to find a scifi fantasy show I don't love (ok I loathe Stargate Universe, and the new Battlestar Galactica was not wonderful to me at all... Sorry if you're a fan!) The other is Perfect Tommy. Do you know Perfect Tommy? He and Rawhide were my total favorites... I almost want to do a fancomic...

Lastly, Sheldon. I still can't draw him as well as I did Horowitz but... I love Sheldon. I love Big Bang Theory. But I especially love Sheldon. Awwww Moonpie... <3

Oil on the Horizon

For those who may not know/care the whole if the Gulf of Mexico may soon become an ever spreading global nightmare fir everyone. The oil rig that blew up and sank had been gushing out enough oil to turn already struggling economies into dead ones.

The paper here at home today outlined a plan that doesn't live up to the headline - "New plan to staunch geyser has never been tried at 5,000 feet." Doesn't It sound like Bob Ballard and his army of undersea robots will show up and like weld stuff? Instead they're going to lower down cement and metal boxes to try and capture and siphon up the oil.

I'd rather use the robots.

I don't often pimp out things but Nico Marlet is one of my most favorite artists who is still among the living. I love him as much as I hate Zawi Hawass. That being said I collect any and all "Art of..." books with his concept work in it. Most notably being the How to Train Your Dragon Artbook! But there is also this book.

I have a copy of it myself and admittedly I do own many many artist sketchbooks but this one is incredibly nicely printed. I was completely impressed when it arrived. It's small in size but just crammed full of artwork like this. Amazing!

You can get it here through Gallery Nucleus. $24.95 for the book which is totally worth it I think but the shipping is a whore. :T Another thing to note is you can't go wrong with The Art of How to Train Your Dragon or The Art of Kung-Fu Panda. Seriously. Love them all.

Olympic Follow Up

So here's the finished artworks that will be winging their way to Miss Zoe Sorenson who sent me a ton of awesome Olympic swag. I put in a view of the one of a kind stamp (that's what the 1 means) that is on the back. The Lion is 6" square and the other 2 are artist trading card sized.

Octopus, peacocks, and lions oh my! As always, the scanning ruins the look of all my glitz and glitter... :( God how I love glitter..... I used Marker, colored pencil, and GLITTER!! The white pen I use... Jeeze I love it so much!!! It's an Inkssentials white pen found in all Michael's stamp areas.

You know like in the old days you'd go to the theater and they'd give you a stamp (like a postage stamp) and you'd collect em into books and so many was worth a gravy boat or a chafing dish or something retarded like that...

But with my stupidity and conciet you'd collect them for artworks, comics, crafts (painted wood dolls, plushes, bookmarkers and so on), etc.?

I just dunno how to set up the earning portion of it all... Hmmmm... Blame it all on my family and the stamp I made to stick onto my original works...

These are the stamps I carved to sent to Marina over at Enchanted Doll for her birthday/contest. I hope she likes them. Per usual, once I started working on them the idea of winning anything went out the window and I was in full on gift-giving creation frenzy!!

This is the birthday postcard I sent Wes, my foe. Mom made me mail this at a random mailbox so we wouldn't get in trouble. I guess it comes off as threatening? ;) I am glad I left off the "But I'll keep trying." I really would hate to be arrested.

Constable Meyerhoff, seated at his desk, should be higher up in the ranks but... He likes his beat. His wife is the daughter of Constable Oberon whom he worked closely with and married her despite Oberon's objections. They have two daughters themselves now, both of marriageable age and since they are as sensible and charming as their mother Meyerhoff is worried the boys at work might try and woo them. He's made it known there will be none of that.

His daughters have other ideas though. So much like their mom! His deskmate is Constable Gallo who is currently dating the eldest daughter in secret and lives in fear of his life if Meyerhoff finds out.

The confused looking mustachio on the corner is Sargent Murdock.

Tiny details are hard!! The material is very responsive and reacts so well but it's SO RESPONSIVE that I had to be careful it didn't take more than I intended. Wow... I am so pleased!!!! <3

Yeah..... I have been productive but not how I want to be! I will have to get moving on it since I will be making something to enter the Enchanted Doll contest! I SO WILL!!! Or die. Well it may be death. Rats!

Mostly I have been doing class prep and so on and nothing good ever comes out of that for me, I'm not some artistic powerhouse like some of the guys I see - I have to hurry! My class is only 1hr 20min long!!! And people trickle in so slowly!! :( Show up on time, or die.

Anyway what I have been managing to accomplish are the Wonderland Arts Project I gave Kristen for her last birthday. I may become ridiculously happy to be done with them in July. :( But!!!! Determination is the name of the game! I didn't take a picture of December so....

And these are January, February, and March all in progress.

Tiny dolls! Kristen liked the one japaneseish doll I sent her for christmas so I thought why not make one like that but wonderlandian! January will be Alice and Ace the white rabbit. (Alice has the penny in front of her and Ace is directly to the right.) February is the Queen of Hearts (farthest left) and she will have several standee Cards with her. And March will be this Trio:

March Hare, Mad Hatter, and Mad March Hare.

So far only Ace, Alice, and Hatter have their wretched sculpt of airdry paperclay hair, ears, and hat. I have to get Ace and Alice painted and sent off this weekend! (I hope) And I need to get the Queen done just so I can have the space of February to crank out that Enchanted Doll entry.

I doubt I will win but I hope I'll get to win a doll! How rad would that be??? Super rad Trish - super rad with a side of you will love making clothes for her! ( have this dream I will get the short haired freckled one I like with the tragic expression! ;) )

In Abracadabra, Tome is a character who plays an immense part in the storylines. Just... not for a while. And he is a character who is a book. A Grimoire if you will. Ok so it continues. And it is all still in pen with pencil shading. The Old Clock was one of my favorite covers of all time. Seriously. I loved it. She was out in the swamp workin on a clock making it seem like a serial killer was behind her. It's fantastic.

I'm still really enjoying playing with the look of Nancy Drew covers. They are so bizarre and fun.

Lots of fun with this one. What an improbable place!!

Nancy on every cover looks sort of stunned or determined yet stunned. Nony just looks like someone asked her to lend them money.

Clearly my own invention. Nony's not too scared of snakes but I gave her my arachnophobia. I love the old film noir lighting that goes across the eyes and I wanted to play with light as a shape over the shadow as a shape that was used so well in films like Nosferatu.

I love Nosferatu. That silent movie is creepy as shit.

Things like.... Nancy Drew. Ok, I know but I'm a girl and something about those painted covers really jazzed me up. It still jazzes me up. I think back on Nancy Drew mysteries and I still feel kinda thrilled. I know 90% of that is me remembering how I felt then but that's ok. It is good to feel like that. Of course I still love the covers. So much so I have stationary and my address book is Nancy Drew. :| What can I say it was full of the covers!!

Yuki 7 Dream

So way back when Kevin Dart was putting his Yuki 7 stuff up on his site I was really entheusiastic and excited to see what he was doing. I mean the whole thing if you know or don't know is really well planned and cool. But that is just the catalyst. I had this dream about a Yuki 7 movie where she was on this Island of Dr. Moreau sort of thing fighting humanoid animal girls, my favorite was the waterfall cave scene where she is sneaking up on what she thinks is a regular animal girl but omg it was a crocodile animal girl.

It was also in French. Le Horreur!!!

If I didn't suck there would be more to this than this page of sketches I did right when I woke up.

KOA Wonderland work

Here's some of the Wonderland stuff I have been working on.

The Caterpillar. I am still working out how his clothes will go but I am happy with the look of his head.

Alice. I like her poofy pumpkin dress and ribbons. If I was Alice I would definitely keep the croquet mallet. Crazy people scare me.

Aborted October. I like it but not enough to really finish it. I totally love the idea of using Dormouse as a cushion but those are the two dudes I would least like to run into.

The sketch for the new October - the Hyde-esque personality for the March Hare that only shows up in March. I really love Kristen's March Hare design but I can't capture that soft gorgeousness hers has so this is the compromise while I work on it. The violent and dominant March Hare.

Fred. Fred is a unicorn. Unicorns aren't naturally what they are here, their form is chosen by who summons them. Nony makes Fred unhappy because she makes him look in his opinion - retarded. He's also addicted to coffee thanks to her which is bad for a being of purity. And she makes him do dishes and mop floors.

Poor Fred.

I lost my cat China to cancer in May. It was really rough because I had to have her put to sleep. I'd ok'd the operation and they were hopeful but the cancer had eaten her insides too much and I had to let her go. It was incredibly hard. I hope no one ever has to go through what I did. I miss her so much and it was a lot to deal with having just lost my Dad last October to Cancer. Did I mention my childhood dog Skipper and my Fraternal Grandparents also died from Cancer?

Cancer needs to leave me and my family the hell alone.

The Princess and the Pea is a totally messed up story. The queen puts a pea under all those mattresses and keeps the girl up all night. I think the girl being so accepting of it is BS. I would have been pretty pissed if I was out in the storms like that and tired and went to rest and was kept up all night. And when it was revealed it was on purpose I would have punched the queen.

This was my third Puss in Boots drawing. I really like the idea that the miller's son is being led about by this flashy cat. I'd think he'd be worried.

It's amazing how much stuff ends up on a HD over time before you go, let's clean this crap off and have a lot of empty space. Yes it is totally the equivalent of throwing away three rooms of furniture. <3 This was just me having fun making screen mockups, see I had this idea that a DJ game would be ridiculous fun on the DS, not actually DJing but more like a rhythm game. Yes I TOTALLY ripped Robert Valley but he is almost synonymous with music to my thinking.
